How did you find out about Phi Theta Kappa?
I received an invitation to join Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) during my second semester at Anoka-Ramsey Community College. I hesitated to join because I did not know if I wanted to pay the one-time membership fee, if I could keep my grades up, or if I wanted to be involved. I tried to convince other people I knew to join, but no one had the GPA. Eventually, I emailed the chapter advisor and got more information from the chapter president and vice president. Finally, I decided to open my email invitation and accepted a day before it expired—one of the best decisions of my life!
Why did you run for regional office?
When I joined, I saw a vacancy in the Vice President of Technology position at my college. I excitedly told my mother that I was going to accept that position and do a lot. Little did I know that all that big talk was going to come true. I gained a lot of experience in that officer position and then decided to be chapter president. I gained even more experience and decided why not be regional president while I am at it? Then, I ran for regional office because I wanted to do more and help others do the same.
What advice would you give those considering to run?
Do not hesitate, do not consider it, and just go for it. So many good things will come from being a regional officer. If you are worried you may not have enough time or experience, keep in mind that you will have an amazing team to work through all of it.
What are you most proud of (e.g. personal or professional accomplishment)?
I am most proud of taking the step to run for regional office and helping my team achieve our goals. My skills as a leader and worker have amplified since becoming a regional officer. One of my biggest accomplishments include assisting with planning and executing the 2017 Minn-Kota Fall Conference. That experience gave me a lot of professional experience that I look forward to highlighting on my resume.
How did becoming a regional officer help you develop? In the past, I was extremely shy and PTK has helped me grow to a point that I never thought imaginable. I have developed the ability to speak in front of large audiences, work on a team, organize multiple projects at once, network with so many amazing people, and so much more.
