Hormel Institute visit - Minn-Kota Honors Institute

Meet the Hormel Institute

We are a biomedical research center with scientists and collaborators working together to accelerate discoveries leading to improved health. Our research contributes to the development of new prevention and treatment therapies for cancer and other chronic diseases.

Started in 1942 by Jay C. Hormel, The Hormel Institute, University of Minnesota is comprised of a group of highly successful medical scientists who are focused on determining the basic molecular mechanisms of cancer development to create new anti-cancer agents. The Hormel Institute is an emerging leader in cancer research and has work published consistently in the world’s leading scientific journals. Researchers are focused on finding better ways to prevent, detect and treat cancer to extend lives.

In 2014, The Hormel Institute started a major expansion to double in size, adding 20 state-of-the-art laboratories and better space for its International Center of Research Technology. The project – which launched just six years after the Institute’s 2006-2008 major expansion that tripled lab space – is expected to be completed in early 2016 along with a new Live Learning Center. Innovative, global-communications technology will be featured in the Live Learning Center’s a 250-seat auditorium that will facilitate international medical research presentations and collaborations. Overall, The Hormel Institute’s new expansion is expected to add about 130 faculty and staff jobs in the coming years, growing the Institute to 250 employees overall.
