War and Musical Innovation in American Popular Music of the Early 1900s

Biography:
Ethan Uslan is a ragtime/jazz pianist based in Charlotte, North Carolina. He is a 3-time winner of the World Championship Old-Time Piano Playing Contest and has performed in many national and international venues. His musical presentations are filled with passion, humor, virtuosity, reflect a deep love for America's rich musical past, and have inspired many previous PTK audiences. Ethan enjoys playing live piano for silent films (Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, etc), talking about the music and the history behind these films, and sharing personal stories about how he evolved into a specialist in old-timey piano. His musical performance at Normandale Community College will also address what impact war and conflict has historically had on music and will showcase the many positive benefits of musical innovations/improvisions.
